KBIS (Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) was held earlier this month in Orlando, Florida. Every year, the event highlights the latest gadgetry in kitchen and bath technology, and explores the latest concepts in design. Which is why we decided to answer the question on everyone’s mind:
What can you expect to be trending in kitchen design this year?
The various shades of grey and blue are maintaining a solid foundation in the kitchen color wheel, but the creative industry leaders are still finding new ways to liven this shade up. The more popular use of grey, particularly mauve-grey shades, is to pair it up with a vibrant ultra violet. When it comes to appliances and trim, though, muted tones with bronze highlights are huge this year.
A surprising color trend is in cabinetry. Painted and/or bleached is hot. While the first concerns are function and flexibility, with space-maximizing drawers that open in surprising new ways, color matters, as well. White cabinets remain a great choice, but muted grey painted or finished cabinets are gaining in popularity. The softer grey is somewhat more calming than bright white, but still provides the oft-desired open look and feel. Another current preference is two-toned cabinetry that features lighter colors or bleached wood finishes on upper cabinets, stabilized with darker finishes on the lower cabinets.
In addition to aesthetics, technology innovation maintains a strong presence. Our kitchen gadgets keep getting smarter and are ultimately making our lives easier. The biggest buzz is around smart ovens and refrigerators and their connectivity. The smart fridge can now scan and recognize its contents, create a shopping list and place an online order for ingredients. The app for the appliance can also find a recipe based on these items and manage the oven’s heat levels to make sure each and every dish turns out just right! What used to be science fiction is now becoming an integral part of design, and innovators in the field aren’t slowing down any time soon.
