A Look Back at the Most Popular Kitchen Design Trends of 2017

When it comes to the world of design, the only constant is change—which is what keeps things fun and interesting! If you’re in the kitchen industry, it’s important to stay up to date on current trends in order to predict what will be popular in the future, and to help your clients see all the wonderful possibilities out there. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of the most popular trends from 2017 to see what direction the industry is taking.

Countertops are a leading focus in kitchen remodels. While backsplashes and sinks are important, 95% of homeowners doing a renovation identify countertops as their primary kitchen upgrade. That may be due to the fact that there were some exciting new offerings and trends this year when it comes to countertops. One such trend is the popularity of upgrading from laminate to natural materials such as quartz. These materials were once considered too expensive for many homeowners, but the development of composite surfaces helps create the high-end look for a relatively modest price increase.

In color trends, neutral tones remain popular, but there has also been a noticeable rise in the use of blues. Still, gray walls are chosen most often, with 26% of renovators opting for this tried and true color. For cabinets, white remains as popular as ever, with 42% of remodels taking advantage of the clean look it delivers. When it comes to countertops, speckled, multicolor surfaces such as granite and quartz are being used 33% of the time.

As far as overall kitchen style goes, the farmhouse look remains popular, in large part thanks to the popularity of Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. Joanna loves her shiplap wood paneling, and many millennial homeowners are following her lead. In the overall remodeling industry, however, contemporary design remains the most popular choice across all age groups. And in a trend that seems here to stay, stainless steel is still the way to go with appliances, with the use of black stainless steel on the rise.

Homeowners were demanding more customized storage solutions in 2017, including pull-out waste or recycling cabinets, cookie sheet/tray organizers, and wine and bar cabinets. These tools help keep a clear worktop to create the illusion of a larger kitchen space. Homeowners also want a kitchen that works with their busy lifestyle, so they’re adding writeable surfaces, such as dry erase walls, islands and countertops.

Your clients trust you to stay up on the latest and greatest in kitchen design, so it’s important to stay abreast of current trends in order to predict what will be popular in the coming years. There were some attractive new offerings and strong trends this year, especially when it comes to countertops.
